Princess In A High Tower. Advanced. Do you understand the joke below?

Once upon a time an evil king captured a virgin princess and held her captive in his high tower. Though she was very beautiful he forced her to wear a disgusting and smelly burlap dress.

"You'll never get away with this," she cried. "Some brave knight will rescue me!"

"Not in that thing," the evil king replied.

She waited day and night, but it was just as the king predicted. Every knight that saw her in the window of the high tower was scared away by her dress, which, as I've mentioned, was very disgusting.

After many months the princess broke down crying and the evil king taunted her, "You see? I told you no knight would rescue a damsel in this dress!"

A Piece of Peace by Sandra James

She sighed, adding another red cross to the tattered sheet of paper. Surely by the law of averages, Toby should get at least half the words right but they rarely were.

There or their, ate or eight; Toby picked the wrong one every time. She patiently encouraged, silently prayed. A good report would offer him a better future than the poverty stricken, violent homelife he’d been born into.

He approached her after graduation, held out drooping flowers and a card.

Dear Miss,

Thank you for giving me a piece of peace when I needed it most.

Can you retell the story in your own words?

Downstream by Emily Roth.

Her son vanished.

His car was discovered near a river, hours north. His shoes stuck in the shallows; his wallet trapped in mud.

She rented a motel room on the riverbank and unpacked her suitcase, pulling his baby photo out last. Her chest ached at his toothless smile.

Day faded to dusk outside her window.

She watched the river churn, its gleaming surface chewing moonlight into specks. She imagined it could swallow her whole.

A knock at her door startled the silence. Cold coursed through her.

The answer waited. She paused, hand on the knob, embracing uncertainty a moment longer.

The story above only has one hundred words.
Can you write one in pairs?
It is a great way to improve writing because you'll have to polish it and get rid of unnecessary words till you have the right number.
